Why Charts Exist at All
A chart is compressed history
A stock chart is simply the record of every transaction between buyers and sellers, compressed into a visual. Nothing mystical — every point on the chart is a price where real people (or algorithms) put real money on the line. Charts matter because patterns of human behavior — fear, greed, herding — repeat, and those patterns leave footprints in price.
What charts can and cannot tell you
Charts can show you: the current trend, where other buyers and sellers previously acted, and how fast price is moving. Charts cannot tell you: why the price moved, whether the business is sound, or what happens next with certainty. Every pattern you will learn in this course is a probability statement, never a prophecy. The traders who fail are the ones who treat chart patterns as fortune-telling.
